Title: Religion
Post by: Yankyal on October 30, 2010, 07:40:46 PM
In this thread we state our religion and try not to argue and quarrel like rabid dogs. We can also state what caused us to join a certain religion.

I am a Born Again Christian and am a bit unnerved by the rising amounts of atheism in our blessed land of America. I have looked at dinosaur fossils and concluded they were all placed there by Satan to turn us from Him who is our savior. Thus evolution is a lie. Your turn.

It's not exactly the same thing....that topic is talking about what happens after you die?which is bound very closely to religion?so that's why it was brought up there.

Also, an OP like that is essentially flamebait, even if you did intend this topic to evolve into a religious debate, which I'm guessing you were. (We managed to almost completely avoid any of that whatsoever in the aforementioned topic.)

Regarding this topic, I'm an atheist. Always have been, always will be.

I recently became christian. If you think my reasoning for evolution being false was a bit unorthodox, it was because I oversimplified the actual reasoning behind my conclusion. It would take several pages of writing to explain why evolution is a myth.

I do not approve of your atheism, but I will tolerate it.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not, but sure, go ahead and write those several pages. I'd be happy to analyze them.

No religious debate. This is for just stating religion. Also, "I'm an atheist. Always have been, always will be." Isn't that a bit stubborn?

I don't believe in any religion, because I believe they are all mindless !@#$wits who would rather be told what to think then do any thinking for themselves.  I have looked at the religious dogma presented, and came to the conclusion that there isn't a single logical basis for any of it beyond an authority trying to impose its rule over a large (and gullible) majority.  But hey, I'll tolerate you.

In other words, your topic is stupid, and the way you presented your OP was so blatantly flame-bait that I hope the mods have their fire-hoses prepped and set to full blast.

Do you think I am a mindless !@#$wit who cannot think for myself?

Potentially, since you completely missed my point.  I was being facetious, to show how utterly ill-conceived his post was by making my post mimic his own, in the opposing view.

As I said, "IN OTHER WORDS..." etc etc.

I'm here beside Chaos. Religion has it's purpose, but the way it is used is all wrong. The driving force behind religion is that it gives people a certain moral and ethical code of conduct to follow. This is good. But when you start praying to some fake man in the sky, I have to shake my head. When you join a cult and waste your time every Sunday with silly songs, I shake my head. When you read books about people doing "magic", and believe it, I shake my head. When you follow a pope who backs pedophiles, I shake my head. It actually disgusts me to watch people follow their religion blindly, simply because they were raised that way, they don't take the time to actually delve into the matter and decide for themselves what they should be, they just believe because those around them do.

Oh, and here's a tasty link for you folks. (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/religion/8030672/US-atheists-know-more-about-religion-than-believers-quiz-finds.html). This goes to talk about how Atheists and Agnostics know more on average about specific religions than their religious followers. This is of course because these people took the time to view the subject matter at hand from all sides before logically deciding that following a religion was all hodg-podg. Oh, and did I mention these people were also smarter on average?

Anyway, this topic is silly, you ask that we "state" our religion, but not discuss or debate it? Than what is the point of this topic? I'm sure if people have a profound need to express their religious beliefs, they can put it in their signature or something.

EDIT: I would just like to take note that I'm aware I'm probably offending a lot of you here, but I don't care.

What is silly is that he asks us to state our religion, but not discuss it, then immediately begins to discuss his own.  Based off that and his other post, the topic pretty much screams "TELL ME IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN JESUS, SO I MAY CONVERT YOU."

No thanks, and once again, this topic is stupid.

Andddd I already see this topic going down a slippery slope, so I'm just going to jump the gun and lock it. You are all perfectly entitled to your own viewpoints, but this probably isn't the best place to discuss them this directly.
