No idea what in the world she is holding, but like people say in the comments, it's 1928, to use a cell phone you would need a signal aye? A satellite or tower?
I saw this on the news and their ideas were that it was some sort of hearing device used at that time.
Also, for the people who think it's a man... she's obviously wearing a skirt and has a feathered hat.
Yeah, it could be something to help her hearing possibly. On the matter of it being a phone, I went on reading the website of the guy who made the discovery and he said that he didn't necesairly mean a mobile phone and he knows that they require transmitter poles and whatnot, but perhaps some other 'future' communication device.

No but considering that was recorded in 1928 and mobilephones did not exist back then...
While it does look like she's holding something and that she is talking to someone (mouth moves). If you pay very very close attention, it looks like shes scratching her head with her finger.

Idk about you, but when I scratch my head my hand doesn't stay that still, especially not for that long. And I would use my entire hand, not just one finger...
Also if you look closely, she DOES have something in her hand.
But I would like to point out that if this were a time traveler, she wouldn't be a very smart one, especially if it were a mobile phone she was holding, because she's walking on a public street. I'm sure people would notice that and think she's bat-shit insane for talking into a black box.

actually i saw this earlier and my friend believe its a hearing device. just one thing i have to say, if it was a time traveler why would they need satellites, i mean if they have the tech to send people into the past they would be far beyond such primitive technologies as radio waves. what if there is another person from the future that they are talking to and the phone produces a signal so powerful that it can send and receive signals from other phones from halfway across the world with out aid of a satellite. anyways im just pulling this out of my ass.

If it was a time traveler, why the hell would they stop at this? Why not pretend to invent things, and screw up the space-time continuum so much they become immortal and the most important person in history?
Also, just because someone holds an object up to their ear in the past for a short duration of time while walking doesn't automatically mean they're a time traveler. It's like saying that just because someone was supposedly killed(with no evidence suggesting that, people can appear dead when they really aren't), sealed away in a cave with a rock blocking the exit, and then a while later the rock is moved and the body was gone, the only logical assumption would be that he had risen from the dead and is the son of God. ....Oh, wait....
EDIT: Sorry if that was unnecessary, but I felt like it was a legitimate analogy. I'm not a militant atheist, just FYI.
