Title: Cracked Tooth?
Post by: Freeforall on March 31, 2011, 07:20:05 PM
Hey guys. I literally just split my tooth in half. It's still in the gum and it hurts a lot. What should I do? I can hear it cracking when I move it, and I can't get it out...

You should remove the last half. If it's stable in there, consider seeing a doctor or something.

Try asking your parents maybe.. I'm pretty sure they'd have more reasoning as to how your dentist could help that.. It's better to keep the other half in rather than taking the entire thing out, but yeah, ask them..

Okay, thanks T_T No blood whatsoever came out from the tooth, which also worries me.

Go to the dentist, if you can't then go to an urgent care (assuming you have one.)

It's actually been like this for a few months now, I just ignored it. But now it's dead I think T_T. There isn't blood or anything, but I am absolutely positive that it is split.

Surprised it hasn't become infected yet.  You must brush often since it has been like this for a while according to you.

It might get in the way of a tooth growth. Yeah, get it checked out.

They might do to you what they did to me, pull the tooth out and give you a new one. ;o

Rather than rip it out, if your are lucky the dentist will fill it in.

I've you've actually "split it in half" the dentist will no doubt pull it and replace it, chances are they won't fill it in.

If the chip hasn't caused any lacerations, and dependent upon how deep it is chipped, I doubt an infection is a possibility.  If you aren't bleeding, the chances of it getting infected due to exposure of raw tissue is probably minimal (or so I would imagine).  The reason for it not bleeding is likely because you either haven't chipped too far into the gum to cause it to bleed, or you haven't hit the root of the tooth.  Teeth are mostly calcium, and at the core, where the root of it is, that is what will bleed, chances are you missed the root (which is a good thing), and the chip hasn't occurred too deep (if at all) within the gum to cause it to bleed.  In that sense, consider yourself lucky, and definitely get it checked out by a dentist.

Like others said obviously tell your parents to make you an appointment with the dentist instead of waiting for your yearly appointment. My sister once chipped her tooth, but it was nowhere near half the tooth. She got it filled in at an orthodontist, so that's probably where you would need to go I would imagine. Good luck and hope it's nothing too serious.

It's almost out, I think I'm just going to pull it out, if I can bear the pain.
EDIT: Wow, just found out that is was a baby tooth. -.- I was worried that this was an adult one. I don't understand how this happens though, I brush my teeth regularly...

Cracked teeth aren't natural.  If they are cracking, you likely did something to crack it.  I've chipped a tooth towards the back of my mouth, but that was because I was doing something stupid.  Do you remember when it cracked, if you did anything to cause it to crack?

If it's a baby tooth, you're fine, the dentist will just pull the entire thing and let the next tooth grow in.  You're lucky in that respect.
