Title: Browser Add-ons
Post by: Scotty on May 01, 2011, 08:53:06 PM
I honestly don't recall if this was done before in another topic, and I can't seem to find it, so I figure I'd take a crack at it.

Add-ons!  I'm curious as to what people use for add-ons on their browsers, please post a link, what browser, a brief description if you'd be so kind, lets make this productive and not just someone's "I think I'm awesome because I have 20 twatzillion add-ons, ruining all screen estate, and would love to share nothing more than a list of my collection"

I primarily use Chrome, but unfortunately have to use all modern browsers as a web developer, here are a few of mine:

Firebug
URL: http://getfirebug.com/
Browser: Firefox & Chrome
Absolutely love this mod.  From a web developer standpoint, it is a must, and allows designers to go hog wild with the source code, but more importantly, it allows you to install...

YSlow
URL: http://developer.yahoo.com/yslow/
Browser: Firefox
If you are a web developer, and you aren't using YSlow, you are missing out BIG.  We've been using this plugin at work, and it is one of the single best tools available on a browser.  It's only available Firefox, but it will grade your application, tell you how to improve it, and I am not joking in that if you put forth the effort to get that A grade, you WILL notice a difference.  For instance, the application I inherited at work started at a D based off of just what the vendor put into it.  After I hacked at it with an e-chainsaw, and got it to an A, we went from absolute crap load times (30+ seconds to load and render a page fully, if at all).  to sub-second page renders.

AdBlock Plus
URL: http://adblockplus.org/en/
Browser: Firefox & Chrome
Ads be gone!  Works Excellent!  There is one complaint, and it may be Chrome exclusive, but it seems to kill youtube videos if they try to start with those annoying ads.  I can't wait for HTML5 to kick in, hopefully they'll cut it with the stupid ads.

Google Mail Checker
URL: http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/notifier_windows.html
Browser: Chrome
A simple notifier that pops up on your Chrome browser to alert you when you have unread email.

Google Voice
URL: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/kcnhkahnjcbndmmehfkdnkjomaanaooo?hl=en
Browser: Chrome
For those of us whom have come to realize the brilliance of Google Voice (yay for being able to ditch all texting payments through our carriers), it essentially does the exact same thing as the aforementioned Google Mail Checker, only for your Google Voice subscription.

MeasureIt!
URL: http://www.kevinfreitas.net/extensions/measureit/
Browser: Chrome & Firefox & Safari
Another excellent web developer tool, allows for you to overlay a custom sized measuring stick across your browser screen to test the widths of divs, images, anything.

LastPass
URL: https://lastpass.com/
Browser: All (I think)
Amazing, amazing, amazing tool.  No longer do I have to remember a password, and I create the most cryptic lengthy 16 character passwords.  Luckily I've adopted an excellent strategy to creating long, unique, and easy to remember passwords, this just makes it that much easier to remember them.

Xmarks is also good to keep in sync. So you can have the same bookmarks, history, tabs, etc from pc to pc.

Out of curiosity, Chrome pioneered the native browser "sync'ing" where you can authenticate through Google and store all your bookmarks and extensions, then all you have to do when you go to another browser somewhere else is log in through Chrome's native Sync option, and you can restore all your Addon-ons and bookmarks,\.  Apparently Firefox jacked the idea as well in their newest browser.  Is XMarks any different?
