I posted this on another site but wasn't getting any feedback so i thought i'd post it here since i feel we're all like a family in this SO community so here it is.
Its the end of my freshmen year soon and i have signed up for the public schooling system. My main reasoning for switching was because
1.i'm failing algebra I and the teacher isn't really good at teaching i also might have to retake it..(this is the only time in my life i've gotten an F in math), i don't know who the teacher is next year though.
2. i got my first ever detention for staying late in a class for a project and not reporting in to my study hall teacher for my next class.
I don't know what the difference with the 2 school systems because i've stayed in the private from elementry to 9th grade and theres a big of amount students difference. And i will barely know anyone which will suck. I'll miss my friends alot and the bond i made with my track coach but theres also more opportunities it seems at public like the added in sport swimming i might like to try and electives.
Just need someone elses opinion badly, thank you.

*ahem* But seriously, I've never been to a private school nor do I know what they are like... Just try not to get corrupted tooo much.
As for the grading, the math teachers at my high school weren't great either.
Electives are great, they can make school a lot easier and way more interesting depending on your hobbies.
You also don't have to wear uniforms-> win.
As for the detention thing(all high schools are different I'm sure) a lot of the teachers would be lenient(also depending how late you were..) But uhhh, for things like that, the class we were staying late in, the teacher would give us a "hall pass" to show our next teacher we weren't bullshitting them.... Also, 3 tardies=detention

Think of the public school system as a taste of the real world, and the private school system as a cult where they try to brainwash their specific ideology in your head, mixed with bits of science and math here and there. Well, that's my experience anyway. I'm sure you'll hear lots of different opinions on this, but I don't think too highly of private schools in general. They have too much leeway to teach kids whatever non-sense they want, often times ignoring science to preach fundamental idiocy.
I went to public school up until High School. Keep in mind, I live in Los Angeles (well, the valley, but same school system), so public school system here is horrible. In my experience the schooling basically failed me (I feel that in spite of the public system I was able to learn math, not because of it.) And the general environment, in my experience, was extremely hostile.
Now, I went to a catholic high school, so some of what Jake is saying is accurate for my situation as well. But, for the most part, if the school wants to be legitimate (and my school mostly was) they have to teach real topics in legitimate ways. They threw the required religious studies in there, but I took away from it what I think I should, which was the study of religion. You really can't be brainwashed by something like that if you don't want to be.

I would take the term "taste of the real world" with a grain of salt though. Keep in mind that a Highschool student's life experiences are far cry from what happens a decade after they graduate. Real life often doesn't have a lot of paranoia revolving around the concern of getting mugged for lunch money as you go from one class to the next because of being the minority. Not saying violence and hostility doesn't exist in the real world, just that bullying at that age has more detrimental effects on influential children then it does with full-grown adults. You know what I mean.
I compliment private schools for the tendency to have less hostility (contrasting to Lingus' public school experiences). Public schools are "free" thus any and every student who's parents can't afford private schools will attend, including the bums and children who live in a less than ideal community (e.g. high violence, crimes, etc...). I went to a private Catholic elementary school, and likewise, have also taken away from it what I needed, which is the concept of religion, and it's effects, dependent tendencies in others, all without being "brainwashed" as Jake likes to put it. Maybe I am the lucky one, who knows.
If you feel like the public school choice isn't conducive to a productive learning environment due to violence and hostility (e.g. bullying), I'd recommend looking into a private school for that reason alone. You'll still have bullies, but there shouldn't be anything that's going to make national headlines, as a majority of the children in attendance come from families who care to put their children through what they would consider "a better school" to get them away from those sorts of exposure.
I was in a private school for elementary times, then public for middle school and currently highschool.
Mine had no uniforms, and wasn't very strict. Very religious though. Which was very useless and boring in my opinion. I liked public more, but maybe it's just me because my parents tend to put me in very nice public schools. I am basically your typical nerd guy, and I am hardly made fun of or bullied at all. And I make people laugh till' they're crying. Very fun.
Some words of advice:
Get involved in something. Anything, whether it be sports, or something technical, do a lot of things extra-curricular that way you will get to know a lot of good people.
And second, don't let bullying or anything like that get to you. Seriously, it's not worth it.
Leaning towards the public school. Wish me luck hope its better. :(

I hated Public School with a passion. I didn't go with a Private School though, Middle of 8th grade I dropped out of the public system and into a Charter School. It was more or less a homeschooling program, where they provide packets of work, and you do said work on your own time schedule, turning in the required stuff once per week. I did attempt to attempt at attempting public high school for my freshmen year, and I survived two weeks through that bullshit. It didn't really understand me and the concept of me hating drama....
That's all I gotta say about public schools, maybe yours could be better. Keep in mind I'm an antisocial geek; if you're a more social drama-enjoying fellow you might like it anyways.
this is what ive encountered from private and public schools.
private
1 usually the kids arent as caught up into the social clicks such as jocks or nerds or goths,thus less harrassment if you are alittle odd, they usually pretty much act like people and think of other people as such. this may be different at other private schools
2. the teachers are 10% more open to helping and or explaining stuff to you.
3 less kids per class
4 the atmosphere seems more laid back at alot of private schools.
public
1 social clicks, jocks, nerds, etc. plus people having egos do to their click. especially jocks who can some times act like they are on roids.
2 teachers dont really care about helping you and some instance may down right put you down infront of people. had a teacher that made fun of me in second grade.
3 not a very good selection of classes or classes that should be there arent. my public school actually droped vocal class because they didnt feel like finding a new teacher for the class.
4 people can be quite ignorant and intolerant of others.
there are probably more but i cant remember since it has been many years since ive been in school
Really, I think it depends on where in the country you're living, too. I went to public my entire life here in Minnesota, and I never had much of a problem with it. People were pretty normal all in all.
Meanwhile, Lucifer stated that all he experienced was bullshit and drama, but he lives in California, whose #1 export is bullshit/drama.
Also keeping in mind that in some cases, (like mine) you've gone to school with most the same people through all the grades. You've seen people in their weird phases, you've seen them grow out of it(though not all of them do..). Even if you start out in a new school in 9th grade, you've been with the same class for a good 4 years. Yeah, there's most likely going to be drama, that's just high school. But I found that by my senior year, my whole graduating class was really laid back; most were nice, even to the nerdy kids.
And anyways, high school drama is so unimportant after high school, it all becomes meaningless.

That's exactly opposite from my experience. My High School was the typical extreme separation of groups.
