I really wanted a HP as my next computer too  :-\ So what's the next best brand to buy?
Anything but Mac.

I agree. And not so much because I dislike their products as the fact that I dislike what they are doing to the industry (even if a lot of it is somewhat indirect).

But I'd also try and stay away from Dell if possible. They have some good deals, but if you want a company that thrives on shitty proprietary parts, horrific quality assurance, and even worse customer support, Dell is definitely the one. Asus has some really good deals, and I do know a lot of people like them, but I myself have had a number of somewhat bad experiences with them lately, so I would be hesitant to recommend them too heavily as well. Honestly, I feel like the whole industry has taken a dive in terms of quality and reliability over the last few years :-\ I would have said HP, but oh well.

Edit: Speaking of bad experiences that can be purely due to the brand as oppose to the tech-specs, here is a good example. My dad bought a high end Asus laptop, and Asus some how managed to use the wrong type of thermal glue for assembling the entire product line, so the things got like 20 degrees Celsius hotter than they were suppose to... Sure the computer was a beast on paper, but none of that mattered if you couldn't run anything without the computer almost melting. My personal expeience with them has also sucked, but for different reasons.

So much goes into building a computer that most people don't even stop to consider, but if a company cheaps out on too many of the "minor details" you can definitely end up with a lot of serious problems.

CherryPie

it's their new CEO L?o Apotheker who doesn't like the fact that HP's considering itself a hardware manufacturer.

How do I know that, you may ask?

Well.. The exact same person has been CEO in my company (SAP AG) for about a year, just before all employees started hating him and his weird selfish decisions. He is doing the exact same thing with hp now. Selling all Touchpads and Smartphones for $79-129 only because he likes to be the CEO of a software-only company is really what you would consider selfish (especially when thinking of all the employees loosing their jobs).

To summarize it, L?o Apotheker is an selfish asshole and I have no clue why HP picked him after the things that happened at SAP..

My boyfriend's friend had a problem like that... something came unglued in his computer, which wasn't a big problem, he just had to buy new glue... (he's good with computers so he knew how to fix it) But the (moronic) people at Best Buy insisted he needed new parts for his computer, when he basically just called to ask if they carried computer glue. He ended up having like a half hour argument with the Geek Squad guy. lol.

From what I hear, the qualifications to be a part of the geek squad are pretty low. Supposedly they aren't even qualified by Best Buy to do much beyond installing antivirus software and other very basic diagnostic stuff like that. Even for some of the simplest hardware upgrades, they apparently are required to ship it off. I've never worked there or anything, but that's what I've heard. This isn't to say that none of their employees are computer savvy, but apparently it isn't a requirement like you would imagine it should be.

Yep all Geek Squad did for me when I handed them my computer was installed antivirus/spyware software and gave it back... and it still ran slow...

Anyways, I think I might get another Gateway because I'm happy with the netbook I bought from them...

My main computer is a gateway, and I've been 100% satisfied with it.  I can't speak on behalf of support, as I've never had to contact them, which to me is even better!  Granted, I will say that the majority of the reason why I haven't ran into any problems is likely due to running Linux as my primary operating system, thus support is on me.  If something isn't going right, it's on me to fix it.  Other than that though, as far as hardware, not a problem yet, and I've had it for over 3 years now.

The computer I had that got stolen last summer was a gateway, and that thing was one of the best computers I've ever had. But unfortunately, when I looked to buy from them again for a replacement computer, they seemed to have a far more limited selection than they did a few years ago. I think they are sort of falling behind a bit nowadays, unfortunately.

Edit: I just remembered another brand that I have heard real good things about. I can't speak from personal experience on this one, but a couple of my computer science comrades back in college were saying that MSI is a great company to buy from, and also has really good support.

I try to prevent them if i go in best buy lol

Yeah... Don't even get me started on the whole "tablets and iPhones will replace computers" thing... Don't get me wrong, tablets are neat, but thats about it as far as I'm concerned. The only people who a tablet can serve as a sufficient computer for is someone who has little to no serious computing needs (or in some cases knowledge). If somehow iPads and other tablets ever ended up "replacing" modern computers I'm pretty sure I would just burn my Computer Science diploma hahaha.

My prediction is that eventually tablets are just going to evolve into laptops again, and then everyone will realize the whole pursuit of tablet computers was a massive waste of time.. When you think about it, tablets are getting more and more powerful, while the already more powerful laptops are getting thinner and thinner. Sooner or later all the tablet people are just going to be like "hey, now that the technology is good enough to do so while still maintaining the aesthetic appeal, it would sure be nice to have an optional keyboard on here too..." Then next thing you know "Hey, now that this tablet is powerful enough and has a keyboard, why the f!@# are we still running iOS or Android on it when we could be running legit linux or windows?" Then whamo, it is now a laptop.
