I have been playing this game for about 10 years now on and off. It is a multiplayer rogue-like rpg. It's based on tolkien lore and sets you in a village from which you can either venture in the wilderness or go down the dungeon on a quest to kill Morgoth the lord of Darkness (roaming anywhere below 5000ft) and all of his powerful unique minions. You can choose from several different races and 6 classes :

Warrior
Mage
Ranger
Paladin
Priest
Rogue

Each with their own set of skills/spells/prayers and bonuses.

It is a very fun, and has deep customizationabilty where as the game offers a way to assign macros to any keys you wish. For example instead of having to press the following (*t) to target then (f) to fire an arrow (1) to designate which stack of arrow. you can simply assign a macro such as this \ef1*t and that key will shoot any arrows in a stack you have inscribed @f1.

The learning curve is pretty steep though and will discourage most new players. I recommend reading a few guides on the official site and the small community (I think its even smaller than S.O. community) will help you out. Expect dieing a lot when you start.. and even when you become an expert as it is extremely hard to kill all uniques in the game. MAngband kings over the years can be counted on my 2 hands I would beleive.

When you die all your stuff drops where you died if there is enough space around to drop it if not some of it may get destroyed and you turn into a ghost which can go through walls, ceiling and floor. If you manage to have someone rescue you, you get to be able to pick up most your stuff if not all. Upon being resurrected you will lose half your exp. If your ghost dies, your character is wiped completely as well as all items you were storing in your player owned houses/shops (yes you can open shops to sell to other players).

I've had a lot of fun over the years playing this over and over and I recently got back into it, I am also Prosper on there and I play a Dwarf Priest. I am currently level 45 (out of max 50).

Looking forward to see some buddies from SO community on if you guys want to spend the time needed to grab the games basics its really well worth it once you get into it :D.

I have been wanting to play this game but have never gotten vary far. I'm going to retry. Also I never knew there was a multiplayer version of Angband.

I can't stand playing single player Angband because things only react when you move. On the multiplayer version turns go by automatically wether you move or stay still so monsters move on their own. Its a lot more immersive this way and makes the hole gameplay better.

It does get a lot harder when fighting strong uniques as where you can die in a split second if you dont heal at the right moment so your heart will be pumping at times...

So many times have I been summoned monsters on me by a mage or something and in a split second I get down to 10% health and then die.

Its all part of the learning curve and fun of the game. I will edit the original post with a link to where all the game data and spoilers are as it can help understand the game and answer questions you may ask yourself along the way.
