Yes, but also no. You shouldn't have to log off after getting an item. From what I understand, the game saves automatically every so often and whenever there is a major change to the account such as picking up an item. I assume you lose items because there is some kind of lag preventing your computer sending data to the server. So logging off wouldn't help anyways.
