The retexture stuff is related to a tweet of his from yesterday:

On my way home. I've found that when making Minecraft mobs, it's very hard to take shortcuts :) Retexturing other mobs simply doesn't work

Another joke attached to this is the Mooshroom, which Notch tweeted about a couple days beforehand, and repeated in response to this tweet yesterday.  Unconfirmed as new mob or simply joke:

If added, it will likely be in the Giant Mushroom biome, and you can shear it for mushrooms.


EDIT:  Just realized that I never reported this news, so here's a bit of catch-up:  Jeb has been working on new Nether stuff.  Here's two screenshots he posted over the past few days.

In the first one, there is apparently a building in the dark area in the center of the pic, and in the second one you can plainly see bridges.

Of course it's 'real', I got it directly off Notch's twitter.  Whether it will be IN THE GAME is unconfirmed, though (but most likely it will be).  Even the Minecraft wiki CLEARLY states: "It is unknown if Mooshrooms will be added to the game. "

And yes, you're misunderstanding.  It will most likely be called 1.8.2.  If it's still too buggy to be called a stable release, it'll be 'leaked' instead.
