In the client of your choice:
/server irc.gamesurge.net
/nick yournicknamehere
/join #so

If you'd like to use a good IRC application and check it out:
mIRC - http://www.mirc.com/
-Tried and true oldbie client, still holds up
irssi - http://www.irssi.org/
-Lightweight command line irc client. Not for beginners usually
Hexchat - https://hexchat.github.io/
-Best for beginners, easy to setup and versatile.

Or the web-based client:
https://gamesurge.net/chat/

Some other things to do:
Register an account (let's you do lots of user management stuff like getting channel permissions)
Register here on Gamesurge: https://gamesurge.net/createaccount/

Hide your hostmask: /msg authserv help addmask and follow those directions. You must be registered to do this.

I already idle on irc 24/7 for development on a C++ game. Might as well idle in another channel.

Not a bad idea, I sit in several different rooms for other development stuff, no harm in sitting in another.  As far as clients, I'd recommend Pidgin.  I use it on Linux, and it supports IRC, MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, Facebook (with a plugin), and just about every other chat protocol out there.

Wow, Pidgin supports IRC too? I'm impressed. IIRC, Pidgin does not support webcam chat, correct? That is why I do not use it.

Unfortunately, you are correct, that seems to be its one downfall...

EDIT: Pidgin definitely supports IRC.  The benefit to pidgin is it's completely open source, so it is supported on multiple different OS's including Linux, Windows, and maybe Mac (not sure).  I figured out they support IRC with the NSA ditched their MIRC licences and discontinued supporting it on their computers and forced us all to migrate to Pidgin, which was great, because I could connect to their IRC servers as well as several other chat protocols that were used at work.

Errr, Iv used Pidgin for IRC before and I had this problem that if I left the window there it would after some time just stop scrolling when something new was said. I would have to go back to the window and scroll down.  I could not figure out how to stop it from doing that. So I gave up on it.

Does any one know how to fix this?

edit: I don't think your mibbit like works.
