Pistol Crab*

Well then, it causes explosions.

It's actually a shrimp. The title is incorrect. It was called the Pistol Shrimp in the video.

What's interesting about this creature is that its claws are basically underwater guns. Don't want to have this as a pet! :P

EDIT: Replaced the video with the proper video. The one I had up earlier was posted by a copycat.

This looks fake to me. "Sonic waves hot as the sun.".....sure this isn't like a spoof thing?

It's real; they just over exaggerated on that part. The bubbles can go up to 5000C, not 1 million.

Still think it's fake? Do a little Google search.

Posted with the ebaumsworld stamp at the bottom...

Or at least the first one was...  Can't say the sound effects help add credit to it's account...

Watch the claim at 1:07.... do you know how hot the sun is? No crab is reaching those temperatures underwater of all places simply by snapping its claw. The species may be real, but as far as the abilities this video claims, I'd imagine many are exaggerated or just completely fake. Wikipedia has gotten more reliable nowadays...but I still would not go out on a whim to believe something just because it was on Wikipedia.

"In sonoluminescence, the peak intensity of the emitted light is at a short wavelength. This indicates that the temperature inside the bubble is at least 10,000 degrees Kelvin (18,000 degrees Fahrenheit). "

The process that it uses to get such high temperatures:

The resulting temperature is instantaneous.

Ah, never heard of that before. That's actually really neat. Wonder if it would be possible to make some sort of engine for submarines that uses this for really fast propulsion?

When released, it snaps into the other part of the claw, emitting an enormously powerful wave of bubbles capable of stunning larger fish and breaking small glass jars O_O

Scotty

Could you imagine having one go off directly in front of your head?  I'd be curious to see what effects the concussion would have on a human skull when making direct contact.
