Well, in the article it says they think it was originally a star which was part of a binary system (two stars in orbit around eachother). The larger star ripped the outer layer of the smaller star, leaving only the heavier elements (mostly carbon). Because of the density the carbon became crystaline which makes it a solid.

But... then it's not a star anymore.. it's a big rock D: Or a dead star?
This star is now diamonds? :)

As soon as it's possible to be worth something, it would be worth nothing. Theorectically. They say that thing is 5x the size of earth. Once we have access to that much diamond, it's not worth much. It would only be worth as much as it takes to mine it from there to here, which by the time we can do so, is probably not a huge deal. I would imagine with access to that much Diamond that we would begin to use Diamond in many more ways. Remember, it is the hardest material we have, or something along those lines, and is often used for cutting. Obviously we would use it in a much grander scale if it was financially feasible.

Yea imagine how much the cost would be to excavate all that diamond, you'd end up spending more then you'd profit from extracting it and bringing it all the way back to Earth... Plus you would have to pay a ass load to the people mining all of the diamond.
