The laptop should not be getting that hot. Even on my other laptop while encoding videos it was only having upwards of 60C. That was while it was encoding for many hours. It would get pretty slow after a while and would decrease in the performance dramatically when it reached that temperature.. Best bet would be to try and either clean out the fans with some air, or open it up from the bottom(If you're lucky, it will have some screws) and use some air throughout the inside. . If you have any sort of Anti Static Gloves or Wristbands it always good to wear those to prevent electric shock and frying it. Laptops have chips rather than cards. Is this on the G61 or a different model? But yeah, best bet would be the components are getting a bit too hot.
Yep, this is on the G61.
And I didn't know it was getting too hot. I thought that was normal for a laptop :o I have it in a very cold room and a fan under it, so I thought I was doing pretty well lol. I guess not :c

just alittle info on part temps, a general rule of thumb for mother boards and cpus is that you dont usually want them above 50c although they can go above that and still be good but not 80c. if i remember 60c, although different manufactures have different max temps, is usually when you should turn off the comp because then the heat starts getting to the point of damaging the parts.  50c should only be gotten too at max or near max cpu usage. the gpu on the other hand, since it is built for high heat thresholds, can be safe at 60c and some times highers. the hard drive shouldnt not get about above 40c. the reason for this is that as the temp in the hard drive increases the heat causes the metals and some materials to expand. this is bad for the parts that are only a millimeter apart or less and will cause dmg over time.

again ive never used or worked on laptops but since they are basically the same type of parts the principles should be about the same.

bad sensors can throw off readings alot. infact the sensor that picks up my powersupply has always been faulty and reads at 79 and 80c all the time but i can put my hand on the powersupply and it is cool to the touch.

Hmm.. I think it's about time for a new computer.

I got another Blue Screen today at startup, shortly after installing a windows update. Not sure what's going on. :/

Freeforall

Sorry for double post, but I got a new computer.

Original price of laptop: $1,800
Bought for: $699

specs? I mean a $1,800 computer means nothing, just look at apple. :P

But your video did look good btw!

Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 310M
RAM: 4GB
Quad Core 2.67GHz i5 Processor
My next laptop will have a Nvidia Geforce 580M :)!

ARTgames

looking good! Nice laptop there.

Scotty

Unless if there's something extravagant about it that wasn't mentioned, that sounds like a $700 laptop, not a "$1,800 but we've got a deal for you" laptop.   Maybe $1,800 back 2-3 years ago when it was first released.  Either way, it's definitely a step up from the previous laptop.  Glad to see it suits your needs.

As a bit of preventative maintenance, I hope you bought some canned air when you got the lappy.  If not, definitely pick up a case of them next time you go to the store.  Every six months, shut off the computer (don't want the fans running when you do this, you'll burn them out quick) and blast some air through every open vent on the laptop.  Unscrew some of the plates if there aren't warranty stickers on them when you go to blast it out, and keep it clean on the inside.  A little preventative maintenance on it will go a long ways.

What are you doing with all these computers you don't use any more, lol.

Freeforall

@scotty, I will do that, thanks :)

@sly, I use most of them lol. I fixed an old one up for my friend who didn't have a computer and gave it do him.

Thanks all for the help and stuff :D And is the Geforce 310M a decent card?

venuse

sorry to say that graphics card according to my searchs isnt very good for modern games. it is called an entry level card and will run modern warfare 2 at low settings and res. i really suggest looking into this stuff next time instead of doing the impulse buy. although atleast it runs unlike your other :P

I always try to exercise a two trip patience if I ever buy from a local store.  One to get there, see what they have, see if there's a reasonable amount left in stock (so I won't be shorted on my second trip), jot down the brands or take photos on my phone of the Best Buy tag with the model/brand/specs/price and go home.  From there I do my digging, weigh 'em all out, figure out what's garbage, what isn't, then go back well educated and make my purchase.

That's just my approach, your mileage may vary.

venuse

well with desktops parts i may compare, search and wait for weeks or months before i buy. then again im the type of person that doesnt get something unless im 95% sure i want it and fits the parameters i want, both in quality and price.
