It would show how much health you lost from your HP bar in that attack. The right side of the semi-transparent red would be where your HP used to be, and the left side of it would show where your new HP is.

And Art, it would be transparent red on blue actually. The blue HUD would show beneath the red HP. Whatever transparency that requires to actually be noticable. Plus it would slowly fade out so you'd eventually see it.
