Only a few days ago I got a job at the local Subway. It pays minimum wage of course, but it is good experience for me (being my first official job). I am also currently trying to get in shape to join the Navy/Airforce and see where my life goes from there. I would really love to be a pilot... And another plus would be to get a college education with help from the military. You really just gotta strive for what you want to do, no matter how impossible it may seem to you.
Don't think joining the military is going to magically solve your problems/boost and you up the workforce ladder. I've seen way too many of my friends get sucked into it believing this and end up entering a downward spiral.

I also know a guy who entered the military, made the most out of the 5 and a half years in, voluntarily did more than most others would do in even 10 years, got out, and got a decent paying job that pays 3x as much as what the gov't. would pay him.
Where was he stationed?

Camp Pendleton, CA.

Although I should clarify that this person worked his butt off, and it luckily paid off in the end.  Sure you could slack off for your enlistment, and leave with nothing more than a card saying you did it, but if you can go through the military, get your education (either as enlisted, or commissioned, which will pay for your college), and get the years experience, you have a SOLID resume.

Scotty, I'm not trying to bash joining the military in any kind of way, I am actually considering joining the Med Corps myself. I'm just saying when you go in, make sure you have the right mindset, and you fully understand what you are getting yourself into. Sometimes it just isn't enough to want to "have an experience".

I wasn't insinuating that you were bashing it.  There's potential for anyone.  Although I will say that while it is nice to be well informed before joining, there is absolutely no way to "fully understand" what it is you are getting yourself into.  You might think you know, but you really don't.  It takes actually being "there" and doing "it" to fully grasp that you have in fact signed your life away.  That's why the few veterans that have truly been "there" and experienced "it" have nothing but respect for those who bravely follow in their foot steps.

Maybe this song will help inspire you to become a pilot for the military.

My father was in the military. Not the American military but Honduras's. You get quite a different perspective of the military from a 3ed world nation that lived close to the us.

My uncle is a former bomber pilot for the airforce. This song inspired him:

My uncle was so good with targeting though that he actually dropped a bomb directly through the window a of a school bus. (In a test, he didn't bomb children...it was a skill drill...VACANT school bus)

Anyways... How many of you would choose something you love to do over a really well paying job? This some-what is related and could be discussed further upon this topic.

I would definitely rather do something I love. You may have a high paying job to start with, but in the end, are you really satisfied? Would I be able to live with the fact that every day I have to go work at a job that I never even wanted? Happiness is the key. We don't live to satisfy others, we live to satisfy ourselves. So to me, my wants and needs are more important than anyone else's wants and needs. Maybe that sounds greedy, but when you think about it, it is absolutely true.

Btw, what is with everyone quoting the entire post? And why the hell did xgamer do that twice without even saying anything?

I kind of think this question may not be worded well. The obvious answer for just about anyone is that they would choose to do something they love. The reality is not always what we want. Sometimes you have to take the job you don't like because you need the money. Sometimes you have to stay with the job you don't really love because it pays well, and is the only way you can cover all of your bills.

I think the real question is, would you rather live in relatively decent conditions doing a job you aren't really happy with, or would you rather live in pretty poor conditions doing something you love? Or maybe even a third option is would you rather live in very good conditions having just about anything you want, but be completely stressed out and miserable with what you do?

Then there's the situations that don't fit any of those. The lucky bastards who get everything they want and love their jobs. And the miserable people who have next to nothing and are in dead end jobs.

Seifer

As for doing something I love over a well paying job...

In most circumstances, you can't ever change what you love into your job, once it's a job it's a job, and that changes everything. No one enjoys and looks forward to those 8 hours of actual work. What makes the difference is your environment, the people you see. If you like where you work, the culture and the people that surround it than you can find enjoyment at certain points of work. Like say you work at a desk, your usually not going to enjoy sitting there doing the job at the computer, but sometimes you see your office mates and chat it up, and lunch and all that jazz, that can be enjoyable.

On top of all this, money makes us all happy. After work, should you have a high paying job, you can go out and enjoy yourself, and the more you make the more possibilities you have, which is where the real happiness comes from. You can all say "Money doesn't buy happiness" and fine, but it damn well helps! I would be much more happy if I had a nice car to get around with rather than the subway, or the choice to go out and grab some beers with my friends more than once in awhile without worrying about my bank account.

I guess I don't get what you are saying? That was the goal of the drill, meaning he did EXTREMELY well. Most people didn't even get close to the target (the bus). They had to do this some thousand feet up in the air on a cloudy day...relying only on radar.

My uncle is a former bomber pilot for the airforce. This song inspired him:

EDIT: Wow what the heck happened to what I wrote...I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything out of the usual quoting wise. Anyways I basically said:

It was a really good thing that he did. The school bus was their target. They had to bomb it some thousand feet in the sky on a cloudy day at night. Most people didn't get the bomb anywhere near the school bus, much less hit it. I believe my uncle was the only one to hit it dead on through the window. Just shows amazing accuracy. Remember that high up the only thing he can rely on is radar...so he did a pretty damn good job.
